Selective Mutism (SM) is a poorly understood anxiety disorder affecting children and adolescents, characterized by a persistent inability to speak in specific situations despite being able to communicate in familiar settings (APA, 2013). This systematic review analyzes 25 studies on psychological interventions and treatments for addressing SM in the child and adolescent population at both national and international levels over the past 10 years. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral treatments, gradual exposure therapies, and play-based therapies were examined, evaluating their efficacy and clinical considerations. The evidence suggests that these methods are effective, especially when implemented early and with a multidisciplinary approach that includes parents, teachers, and therapists. However, further research is needed to culturally adapt treatments and assess their long-term impact.
