People who are diagnosed with intellectual disability have several limitations in the
emotional range that affect negatively in their general well being. However, there aren´t many
studies about emotional limitations and abilities in this group.
Emotional intelligence is an ability that can be developed and improved in any period
of our life and it has influence in our thinking and behaviour. One of the more important
theorical models in this field is the Mayer and Salovey´s skills model.
In this research we put into practice an educational program about emotional
intelligence whose goal is to improve the perception and understanding in people with
intellectual disability. We have evaluated the efficacy of the program through the application
of the MSCEIT and TECA tests. The results we got from the comparison of averages show
that the program has improved these abilities significantly.
