The current picture of the teaching of viola in the city of Medellín presents several challenges
concerning the repertoire used as pedagogical material. Most of the methods used in
institutions that provide viola training contain foreign repertoire, mostly intended for violin
and then transcribed to viola without taking into account the idiomatic characteristics of the
instrument.
The objective of this research is to generate pedagogical material through arrangements
based on traditional Colombian music such as bambuco and pasillo, taking into account the
idiomatic characteristics of viola and its usefulness as an interpretive and pedagogical
repertoire for the teaching of the instrument. This research has been conducted under the
qualitative approach and with an exploratory scope.
The final result comprises a method composed of six arrangements for viola that includes
bambucos and pasillos for intermediate level, with didactic indications proposed for their
study. Among the conclusions, we highlight a large amount of repertoire that allows to be
transcribed and arranged according to the idiomatic characteristics of the viola and its need
to be integrated into the teaching of the instrument.
