| dc.description.alternative | This work presents a documentary photography project on the last miners of the Nicolasa Mine, the last coal mine in Asturias still producing coal, which ceased operations on 17 December 2024. Its aim is to create a visual archive that preserves the individual and collective memory of a trade and a community at the moment of their disappearance. The project, comprising two separate documents, combines historical, regional and visual research with the production of a series of photographic portraits, following a methodology based on documentary analysis, the study of photographic and artistic references, and fieldwork involving negotiated access to the mine’s facilities. The images were taken in the lamp room, using a style characterised by frontal composition, stillness and a black background, in accordance with an informed consent protocol. Of the twenty-seven miners portrayed, twenty were selected and compiled into a separate photobook, which is complemented by a selection included in this thesis. The results confirm that the photographic portrait does not fully preserve embodied memory, understood as the physical knowledge accumulated over decades of work, but it does bear witness to its existence at an irretrievable moment. This testimonial function justifies the practice of photography as a political and archival act in contexts of deindustrialisation. | |
