The use it is made of students’ mother tongue (L1) is constantly changing. Throughout history, there have been detractors against this use, such as those supporting the Direct Method; as well as there have been some in favour of introducing student’s L1 in the classroom, such as those defending the Grammar-Translation Method.
Nowadays, more and more English native teachers are working on the Spanish educational system and they are characterized for making a regular use of the English language. In contrast, non-native teachers tend to use students’ mother tongue in their daily school life, fact which is sometimes appreciated in their methodologies.
In the present paper, a group of 4º Secondary School students attending lessons from a native and non-native teacher is analysed. Each teacher’s methodology therefore has been studied and as a result, it has been proved that students are inclined to use English if they are with the English native teacher, the same way they have the habit of using Spanish when being with the non-native teacher.
