Antecedentes y justificación.
Aproximadamente, la mitad de las gestantes que dejan de fumar durante el embarazo
recaen a los pocos meses de dar a luz y, pese a que se han localizado algunos factores
predictores, aún no se han desarrollado intervenciones eficaces para prevenir estas recaídas.
Por ello, se propone un enfoque alternativo para estudiar el fenómeno, mediante el uso de
metodología cualitativa. Así, el objetivo principal de este proyecto es investigar las
percepciones de las mujeres que volvieron a fumar después de haber dado a luz, abarcando
los elementos motivadores u obstaculizadores que estuvieron involucrados, y el rol de la
maternidad y el entorno social en el proceso.
Objetivos.
Investigar y comprender el fenómeno de las recaídas postparto en las gestantes fumadoras.
Metodología.
Se llevarán a cabo entrevistas individuales semiestructuradas de una 1 hora y media a
mujeres residentes en Logroño que dieron a luz el año anterior, las cuales serán clasificadas
en distintos grupos según su nivel socioeconómico y si recayeron o no tras el parto,
formando así diferentes perfiles. Asimismo, las entrevistas se dividirán en las siguientes
áreas temáticas: elementos facilitadores y protectores de recaídas, percepciones acerca del
proceso de ser madre y la influencia del tabaco sobre él, y el papel de los servicios sanitarios.
Mediante análisis temático, se interpretará la información obtenida, la cual será separada en
función de los perfiles las participantes, buscando si los hubiese elementos comunes y
diferenciadores.
Relevancia y expectativas.
Se elaborará una propuesta teórica de actuación sanitaria con toda la información
recopilada, con el fin de que sirva de base para desarrollar otras intervenciones más
específicas a futuro.

Background
Approximately, half of the women who quit smoking during pregnancy relapse within a few
months postpartum and, even though some predictors have been identified, effective
interventions to prevent these relapses haven’t been developed yet. Therefore, an
alternative approach is proposed to study the phenomenon, using qualitative methodology.
Thus, the main objective of this project is to investigate perceptions of women who returned
smoking after childbirth, covering motivational elements or obstacles that were involved,
and the role of motherhood and social environment in the process.
Objectives
To investigate and understand the phenomenon of postpartum relapse in pregnant smokers.
Methods
Semi-structured individual interviews of one and a half hour will be conducted with women
living in Logroño who gave birth the previous year, and who will be classified into different
groups according to their socioeconomic status and whether they relapsed after childbirth,
thus forming different profiles. In addition, the interviews will be divided into the following
thematic areas: facilitators and protectors of relapse, perceptions about the process of
becoming a mother and the influence of smoking on it, and the role of health services. By
thematic analysis, the obtained information will be interpreted, which will be separated
according to the participants’ profiles, looking for common and differentiating elements, if
any.
Relevance and expectations
A theoretical proposal of healthcare actions will be elaborated with all the information
gathered, to serve as a basis for the development of other more specific interventions in the
future.
