Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) is a treatment of wounds of very different
etiologies; it is local, active and non-invasive, which promotes healing in a wet negativepressure environment. (1) It Improves blood perfusion, increases granulation tissue and
reduces bacterial rate. (2)
A porous foam connected to a tube is applied to the wound bed (wound base), sealed with
an adhesive dressing and connected to a vacuum pump through a tube. The exudate is
collected in a container. (3)
It is necessary to systematize the NPWT methodology in a nursing care protocol that serves
as a guide and support in the decision-making process.
The NPWT reduced the economic costs by reducing the number of change of bandages
dressing, the time spent by the professionals, the duration of the hospital stays and healing
time, so that the consumption of resources is less. (4)
