This study analyses the novel Celia, institutriz en América (1944), by Elena Fortún, as a work shaped by exile and identity transformation, distancing it from its traditional classification as children's or sentimental literature. The central hypothesis posits that the novel should be read as a narrative of vital development. In it, the protagonist undergoes a complex process of self-definition, marked by uprootedness, modern femininity, and the experience of estrangement. Using a hermeneutic and comparative approach, this study combines textual analysis with brief cross-references to Oculto sendero and theoretical frameworks on female identity, life writing, and exile narratives. Through key scenes—such as the jungle journey, affective bonds, and intimate writing—the paper reveals how Celia confronts an inner redefinition. The conclusion argues that Fortún, by disguising her critique within conventional narrative forms, constructs a modern heroine who, despite external constraints, succeeds in affirming herself.
