This Final Degree Project examines the difference between documentary photography and images generated through artificial intelligence through the case of study of the Aral Sea. The research argues that this distinction should not be understood solely from a technical or visual perspective, but mainly through the conditions under which images are produced. The main objective is to demonstrate that documentary photography is defined by the photographer´s presence, experience, and gaze, understood as essential elements of visual testimony. The methodology combines theoretical research, critical analysis, and a documentary photographic project developed through fieldwork in Uzbekistan. The study addresses concepts such as the relationship between image and reality, the ethical dimension of documentary photography, and the contemporary transformation of visual culture in the context of artificial intelligence. The result shows that documentary photography maintains a material and experiential connection with the territory and with the people portrayed, while AI generated images are constructed from data and algorithmic processes without direct experience of the world. In conclusion, this project argues that documentary photography remains relevant today precisely because of its capacity to construct memory, testimony, and knowledge through lived experience.
