La sociedad es cada vez más consciente del valor de su propio territorio. Las múltiples facetas que presenta (ambiental, cultural, económica, etc.) son motivo de protección y desarrollo, considerándose un recurso imprescindible para sus habitantes. Pese a ello, el territorio se ve sometido también a una serie de presiones que han deteriorado sus características naturales y culturales.
