adaptable a distintas configuraciones urbanas.
The present Master's Thesis aims to design and validate a modular system of semiunderground
containers meant for selective urban waste collection, attending requirements
of sustainability, accessibility, operational efficiency, and urban environment adaptability.
Firstly, a state-of-the-art investigation on this matter has been carried out, including, among
others, an analysis of the systems that are currently in use and an evaluation of viable
sustainable materials such as bioplastics, recycled rubber, and reused aggregates. Our
proposal includes a modular design consisting of five distinct fractions, a load frame with a
hydraulic lifting system, and an optional module for microalgae harvesting focused on
sequestering gases produced during decomposition processes. Following the Design Thinking
methodology, a series of 3D CAD models, a functional analysis, and an estimated return on
investment (ROI) calculation have been included. As a result, a technically viable proposal has
been developed, easy to maintain, scalable, and adaptable to different urban configurations.
The implementation of this system could not only improve waste collection services but also
add environmental and educational value to public spaces, serving as a multifunctional
infrastructure.
