Background: borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a relatively common mental health condition that can substantially interfere with parenting. Symptoms such as emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and unstable interpersonal relationships often affect caregiving and may hinder children’s socioemotional development. Objective: this review analyzes the main characteristics of parents with BPD, the emotional and cognitive consequences for their children, the most widely applied early intervention therapies, and the social stigma frequently associated with this clinical population. Method: a theoretical review was conducted through structured searches in scientific databases, selecting studies on BPD and parenting, developmental outcomes in children, and intervention strategies. Findings: evidence suggests that parenting challenges typically emerge during pregnancy and intensify during childrearing. Nevertheless, multidisciplinary interventions focused on secure attachment and reflective functioning during the perinatal period have consistently proven effective in promoting healthy child development and enhancing long-term parental mental health.
