Social networks allow users to consolidate relationships both in the offline
world as well as to build new personal bonds. They also express their personal
identities, despite the specific nature of the digital realm. The paper explores how selfexpression
is performed in social networks. It’s based on an extensive literature review
of quantitative research and empirical studies on expression of identity on the Internet.
We complement it by theoretical approaches on identity in the contemporary world and
classical works on the presentation of “self”. The aim is to explore the textual and visual
rhetorical strategies through which social network users express and construct their
personal identity. The paper provides an overview of social networks as an area of
communicative interaction. It also shows, in terms of expression of identity, some
similarities and differences between face-to-face communication and computermediated
communication.
