One of the basic processes of maternity in its early stages is to create a healthy emotional
bond between the mother and her baby, which will have significant repercussions. This study
has investigated whether obstetric violence that the mother may have suffered during
childbirth is related to the formation of this bond. To do so, 245 women from the general
Spanish population who had given birth in the last year were analyzed. They were given an
online form that included validated instruments for this purpose. The variables measured in
this study were obstetric violence and mother-baby bond, which had a latter divided into four
specific variables: Bond deterioration, maternal anxiety and distress, lack of enjoyment and
affection for the baby, and rejection and risk of abuse towards the baby. After data were
analyzed, it was found that the evaluated women had obtained levels of obstetric violence
from low to moderate, and demonstrated a relatively strong mother-infant bond.
Furthermore, the more obstetric violence suffered during childbirth, the worse the motherbaby bond was. Furthermore, the more obstetric violence suffered during childbirth, the
worse the mother-baby bond was. It was confirmed that not being respected during their
childbirths had negative consequences for the mothers to the extent of deteriorating their
maternal bonding skills with their babies. It is important, therefore, to carry out urgent actions
in the healthcare system to help preventing such actions, towards an improvement in the
health of mothers, babies, and families, which will impact society as a whole as well.
