This article offers an interpretation of Javier Cercas’ Las leyes de la frontera (Outlaws, 2012), alluding to the homonymous film adaptation by Daniel Monzón (2021), analyzing the urban space as well as those characters who occupy such space. The conclusion is that the novel’s first part sets a Pre-Modern urban space occupied by young delinquents, quinquis. These quinquis are given exotic, romantic, and Orientalized attributes. With such characteristics, the Pre-Modern essence of their habitual quarters (barrios) and the city’s outskirts are the only viable spaces for them. The novel’s second part deconstructs the myth around those characters, altering at the same time the urban environment. The output of that change is either gentrification of the quinqui’s former areas, a simulacrum of a city devoted to consumerism, or the exile to the polis’ liminal spaces of characters that became wasted lives incapable of integration in a liquid Modernity.
