For decades the construction industry has been focused on developing new materials for minimizing environmental impact and improving the building insulation envelope. The use of certain wastes as additives for construction materials have been shown to be the best alternative. In particular, the fired clay brick industry has been highlighted as an optimal sector for incorporating such residues due to the large amount of mass flow and high temperatures involved in the manufacturing process. This paper assesses the feasibility of using wood chips from a pruned grapevine shoot as an additive for manufacturing fired clay bricks. Samples with different percentages of the additive were formed and tested. It is concluded that a maximum of 10% of wood chips can be added, which produces compressive strength values above 5N/mm2. In spite of thermal conductivity being reduced up to 50%, water absorption is raised up to 30%. Thus, bricks must be coated to prevent masonry damage.

Implications of life cycle energy assessment of a new school building, regarding the nearly zero Energy Buildings targets in EU: A case of study Muñoz, P; Morales, M P (UNIR); Letelier, V; Muñoz, Luis (UNIR); Mora, Daniel (Sustainable Cities and Society, 07/2017)Lately EU has promoted several policies with the aim of reducing buildings energy impact. Despite such policies have successfully contributed to reduce residential buildings (RBs) energy consumption, non-residential buildings ...
Influence of the type of lightweight clay brick on the equivalent thermal transmittance of different types of facades on buildings Morales, M P (UNIR); Muñoz, P; Juárez, M C; Mendivil, M A; Olasolo, P (Materiales de Construcción, 09/2016)This paper compares the equivalent thermal transmittances of different façades built using commercial clay bricks with three different thicknesses and façades made using the same method but with ceramic bricks with optimized ...
Fired clay bricks made by adding wastes: Assessment of the impact on physical, mechanical and thermal properties Muñoz, P; Morales, M P (UNIR); Letelier, V; Mendivil, M A (Construction and Building Materials, 10/2016)The addition of residues into clay matrix has been widely reported and reviewed during last decade. The heterogeneity of wastes and the lack of detailed information make difficult to provide an overall framework for comparing ...
